HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: IOW-A837B4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete cast copper alloy harness pendant of Medieval date, probably 14th century. This incomplete pendant has a suspension loop that is turned through 90° to the plane of the main part of the pendant. When complete, it would have had an open quatrefoil within which a decorative hanger would have been suspended. The hanger swivelled from and iron axis bar, a small part of this has survived. A projection from one of the angles between the foils ends with lozenge-shaped terminal. The front of the terminal has an engraved saltire cross motif. This pendant has dark green patina and tniy flecks of gilding are barely visible. 31.0 x 24.1 x 5.5mm. Weight: 7.11g. Compare with a similar and more complete harness pendant from Brighstone Parish, Isle of Wight. See, Portable Antiquities Scheme find: IOW-1AA1D3.
