A complete lead or lead alloy shield shaped trade weight of the Medieval to Post Medieval period, dating from AD 1250 to AD 1600.

The shield weight is sub triangular in shape, with a raised design on the front, possibly depicting a cross or a lion rampant (left), however it could equally be a result of plough damage, it is difficult to tell. A border is present around the edge, consisting of multiple evenly spaced diagonal grooves. The front of the weight is plain and undecorated. A rectangular perforation is present near the top of the weight and measures 3.4 mm wide and 3.3 mm long. The reverse of the weight is plain and undecorated.

It measures 33.3 mm in length, 27.6 mm wide and 10.9 mm thick. It weighs 59.9 g (2.11 oz).

The weight is a light grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.

Lead weights such as this were used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. Similar weights have been illustrated in Biggs (1992), p 42 and 43, other similar weights have also been recorded on the PAS database including YORYM-73CBD0, WMID-185044, DEV-A400D0, SOM-8AB516 and WMID-7B1E06.
