A Medieval silver coin brooch. Treasure case no. 2009 T475. This brooch is made from a silver penny of William I, type VII, Profile/Cross and trefoils, issued by the moneyer Ælfwig of London, towards the end of William's reign. The coin has been transformed into a brooch by riveting a pin-fitting to the coin with two large silver rivets. The rivets remain, but the fitting itself has largely disappeared, although traces of corrosion products indicate that this had a single base plate spanning both rivets. The pin was attached to the obverse of the coin, meaning that the reverse, which shows a cross, would have been the side which was visible when worn. This forms part of a growing group of coin brooches or badges from the late Anglo-Saxon and early Norman period, most if not all of which display the cross. The majority of these are also gilded, but there are a number of exceptions, and there are no visible traces of gilding on this example. Obv: Crowned bust right, with trefoil sceptre in front.
