Cast copper alloy head from a Limoges style figurine of Medieval date.
It is a fragment of a mount from a processional cross, dating to circa AD 1200 to 1300. The mount is in the form of the crucified or 'suffering' Jesus, and would have been attached to the processional cross in the centre at the top.
On his head is a crown which would have had three rises to it; one at either side and one in the centre. Only the left hand side one remains. Jesus's head is shown angled slightly to his right, and his face is shown with a sorrowful expression. His eyes are circular hollows. His mouth is slightly downturned, emphasising the sorrow shown in his eyes. The figure is broken just as the neck starts.
The figure was hollow and the reverse is missing, leaving only the front of the head, the depth of the head is 12.09mm.
The object has a mainly brown patina with some patches of green due to corrosion.
A much more complete example has been recorded on the database as LIN-A7A7E7.
