The mount is sub-triangular in plan, however the edges are wavy as they match the interlacing decoration of the mount. The interlace decoration is defined by areas of open-work. The design appears to be a simplistic knot pattern made up of three zoomorphic figures. The corners appear to be the head of the figures. The eye of the figure is made by the head of a copper alloy rivet. These rivets protrude on the reverse. The rivets are slightly bent. The mount has a dark green patina.
Helen Geake writes: Although the original date-range given for this was 500-800 AD, it sounds from the description (there is no image) of interlaced decoration that the object is more likely to be seventh- or early eighth-century in date.
