MOUNT

Unique ID: BH-16D626

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper-alloy mount of probable 16th century date, possibly associated with a sword belt. For a parallel, see Read 2001: 30, no. 349. The upper surface of the mount bears relief-cast decoration in the form of a flower, possibly a tulip, with a central stem, roots, two petals and a head. The shape of the mount reflects the nature of the design. At the base is a damaged bulbous projection containing the root element. This narrows towards the top before the sides splay outwards at the point of the leaves. The sides then narrow again before extending outwards into the trilobate top. There is one surviving rivet hole, located centrally, just below the top side. It contains remnants of a corroded iron rivet. The mount is bent and the surfaces are corroded but bear traces of a black coating. The artefact measures 25.5mm long, 15.2mm wide and 1.5mm thick. The weight is 2g.
