A worn and corroded 3rd-century, possibly irregular, base silver Roman denarius of Elagabalus, possibly 'P M TR P III COS III P P' (Sol), Rome mint (c. 220 AD; possibly R.I.C. 28). This coin has been pierced through the obverse face, probably with a nail. The piercing is at around 7 o'clock on the obverse and around 5 o'clock on the reverse.

Notes:

The British Museum clarified its advice on modified coins in April 2017. Single precious metal coins from the Iron Age to AD 1180 which have been modified in any way, including by a single piercing, are now thought to fulfil the criteria for Treasure because they should be regarded as single precious metal objects. This item was recorded before the advice was clarified, otherwise it would have been reported as potential Treasure.
