An incomplete, slightly worn and bent late 10th-century early-medieval silver penny of Aethelred II (978-1016), 'Crux' type, uncertain moneyer and mint (c. 991 - 997 AD; North 770). This coin has been cut down to the inner circle, in some places following the line in varying levels of neatness, in others going beyond the line. The purpose of such reduction is uncertain, although not an isolated occurance (see 'Notes', below).

Notes:

A number of coins recorded on this database seem to have had deliberate clipping or breaking down to the inner circle. The closest to this example is record BERK-2B6456, a 'Last small cross' type (North 777), with no extant legend. Another 'Last small cross' type (SUR-65D893) has lost around one third of its legend, while a 'Crux' type (KENT-11E076) has lost around three quarters.
