BROOCH

Unique ID: SOM-016847

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Fragment of a Roman brooch, probably of 1st to early 2nd century AD. The type of brooch is difficult to pinpoint as only part of the bow and leg remain, the rest is missing. The bow is thin, tapering gently down to the leg. It has a roughly triangular patch of incised decoration on the upper surface, but erosion means that this is difficult to make out now. The leg of the brooch flattens out slightly to the reverse, forming a catch-plate to hold the pin, but the majority of this has broken away. The foot of the brooch has also broken away. The object is badly pitted with erosion and in fairly poor condition. Length: 52.47mm, Width: 7.09mm, Thickness: 5.10 Weight: 4.05g
