BUCKLE

Unique ID: CAM-86A5C7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Fragment of copper-alloy buckle from a sword belt. The lower edge survives, together with part of the central bar, which ends in an integral suspension loop turned at right angles; this suspension loop would originally have held a hook fixed onto a scabbard. The buckle would originally have had two rectangular loops, and as the lower corner of one survives, an original length of c. 32 mm can be reconstructed. The cross-section of the surviving loops, and the suspension loop, is rectangular; the cross-section of the bar is roughly circular. The fragment weighs 3.99g. Sword belts with buckles such as these were worn in the 16th and 17th centuries.
