Roman enamelled cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch, 2nd Century AD. S-shaped plate brooch. One of the terminals is missing; the other is in the form of a head with a curved bulbous snout and large pointed ear; there is a red enamel circle within a red cresent on the snout. The body is decorated with a row of lozenge-shaped cells (1 red, 2 blue, 2 orange, 2 blue, 1 red) with a row of triangular red enamel cells on either side. There is a damaged semi-circular cathcplate on the reverse of the surviving terminal head. There are small trasnverse lines projecting from the underside of the snout and from either side of the body - they are aligned diagonally from the snout to the fat side of the body (and presumably originally to the other snout). Pitted mid green surface with some chalky white patches. Incomplete with only one head remaining. Length 36.5mm, width 17.8mm, length of head 16.0mm, width of head 7.1mm, thickness 5.4mm, thickness including catchplate 9.7mm, thickness of catchplate c.1.8mm, weight 8.48g.
