Medieval seal matrix; cast lead seal matrix of probable 13th century date. The matrix is of pointed oval shape and has a central device of a feather, leaf or ear of corn, with a further stylised leaf attached to either side, forming a lys-type motif. The inscription around the edge reads S’hVGONIS FIL WIVET, which may translate as ‘Seal of Hugo, son of Wivet’ or similar. The reverse has a break at the top where there was probably a suspension loop and there is a tapering, moulded tongue leading down the vertical axis of the matrix, from the suspension loop. Length 29.3mm, width 20.7mm, thickness 4.3mm, weight 10.17g
