Catch-piece from a 17th-century dress fastener, made from copper alloy with a white-metal coating. It consists of a large central oval plate with a rectangular loop at one end and a small pierced D-shaped lobe, with terminal projection, at the other. Similar pierced D-shaped lobes are found on either side, set slightly closer to the rectangular loop than to the other end. One is complete and one is now broken and incomplete (fresh break). The dress fastener is decorated with a pattern of incised lines which radiate out from the centre of the rectangular loop, forming perhaps a plant-like pattern with two straight lines in the centre and a pair of outcurving lines to either side. At the ends of these lines are short curved lines made by the use of a circular stamp held at an angle. In the spaces between are tiny ring-and-dot stamps and areas of stipple made from very tiny punchmarks. There is also a border of tiny ring-and-dot stamps. The reverse is undecorated except for the white-metal coating. It measures 38 x 26 mm and weighs 5.79g.
