Reference for the real issue (and not this imitation) can be found in Dumbarton Oaks Coins vol 4, no 33. Julian Baker of the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford) indicated that it was a good imitation, though the style was not quite right, and the coin itself is too round and not irregular enough to be an official issue of the era. That said, it is probably contemporary as these have very little collector's value, unless made as a tourist trinket in more recent centuries.2009-06-25 09:08:012012-09-24 11:54:50311949-01-011Certain3670014A4330610140D7242NCLCopper alloy10627Struck or hammeredCompleteBYZANTINEx13731p0gjgrsg24gMetal detector26042196859685NZ3667NZ3667NZ36NE54.996285-1.4388226100119311forward bust with orb and sceptre, based on Alexois Ifacing bust of Christ, based on anonymous follis of 10-11th century date447118231120371273copper tetarteronAlexios I KomnenosAlexios_I_KomnenosConstantinopleconstantinople520985694768729393524700247329393524Constantinoplebreathy.bridge.cubex21179Slightly worn: very finelightly_wornNon English coinContemporary copy214906DSCN0604.jpg339875Early Medieval token: byzantineMuseum of Antiquities of the University and Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne5images/rcollins/Land dedicated to the display of a monumentOtherMetropolitan DistrictSouth TynesideMetropolitan DistrictSouth TynesideReturned to finder608995423
