An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Cross bow brooch dating to the late 3rd – 4th century. The upper part of the bow is all that remains of this example, also missing are its pin and a knop from one the end of its crossbar. The upper bow has an onion-shaped knop with moulded base disk which is cast integral. The brooches arms are rectangular in section, with the sides stepping up to the bow, one arm terminates with an onion-shaped knop with moulded base disk, and this is attached separately. The arms have vertical incised grooves beginning from the moulded base disk and terminating at the bow. The bow is trapezoidal in section with a collar round its base. On the reverse of the base of the bow is a concaved depression which is likely to be the remains of the brooches lower section. In profile the bow of the brooch is D-shaped. This crossbow brooch is of Swift type 3/4 it can not be further defined due to the lack of the lower section. c. 325-410 AD
