Description: A fragment of a composite gold object. Rectangular in plan with both terminals ends missing due to old breaks. The object consists of a sheet of gold the front face of which is rounded, the longitudinal edges of this sheet are bent over very slightly to hold another flat rectangular sheet of gold to its back face.
Notes:
Discussion: This fragment could have originally possibly have been part of some sort of composite item of jewellery, such as a surround for a gem in a necklace. The fact that the object has been found on the same area as predominantly Anglo-Saxon circa 7th century objects implies that it is perhaps most likely to be of this date.
The precious metal content of this gold fragment fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %.
