Description: A gold and garnet mount of probable 7th century date. The mount is circular in shape and consists of a circular cabochon garnet mounted onto separate gold sheet back plates. An inner back plate can be seen through an irregular hole in the centre of the outer one. Soldered to the outer back plate is the retaining collar for the garnet, which has a double filigree border or trim, the outer filigree being slightly larger than the inner one.
Notes:
Discussion: This mount is most likely to have originally been part of an Anglo-Saxon composite disc brooch. There is an example of such a brooch from Sarre, Kent (L Webster and J Backhouse, (eds) The Making of England London 1991, 48-48, 31a). This parallel is a cloisonné disc brooch inlaid with white shell, garnets set over hatched gold foil, panels of sheet gold decorated with filigree, and finally circular cabochon garnets in tubular gold settings, which this what this mount could easily be.
Another disc brooch, this time with missing circular garnet and their settings, is known from Sutton, Suffolk (West 1991, 246, fig 128, no 7).
The precious metal content of this mount fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %.
