An incomplete cast copper-alloy late Roman artefact known as a 'nail-cleaner strap-end'; it could have been either or both. The object takes the form of a truncated pointed oval. It is flat and rectangular in cross-section. At one end is a pair of small crescent-shaped lugs, above which is a rectangular stub which has been broken. These crescentic lugs are characteristic of the main group within this object type (Eckardt with Crummy 2006, 87; fig. 3). Below the neck and lugs, the curve to the widest point is gradual, as is the curve to the terminal. The terminal is squared off with a slight V-shaped removal within a longer triangular groove on the upper surface. This gives the strap-end a slight fork or bifid end. Though the prongs of the fork may be too short to be effectual, it is clearly reminiscent of a nail cleaner. The terminal has been bent upwards slightly in profile. By contrast to the plain lower surface, the upper surface is finely decorated. At the base of the crescentic lugs is an incised transverse line. Between them is an incised saltire cross, and in line with their tops is a double transverse incision. The rectangular field above the lugs is decorated with transverse nicks along both sides. The edge of the body of the artefact is decorated with punched crescents (horseshoe shape) facing inwards all around. Within this border are fine elongated 'S' shapes that interlock. The object now has a generally dark green patina with some pitting. 'Nail-cleaner strap-ends' have been argued to be unique to late Roman Britain (ibid.).
