Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery ‘Severn Valley’ vessel. The sherd dates to the Roman period (50 - 410), however, not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size and without this a more specific date is difficult. The rim has a stepped appearance; in that the side wall projects above the rim and the rim extends at an angle of 90 degree from the vessel wall. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz and grit inclusions; there are also a number of oval hollows suggesting the use of oolitic limestone which has been leached from the sherd by soil conditions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform mid orange colour. A suggested diameter of the rim is 23cm, and the sherd represents 5% of the rim. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated. The sherd measures: 23.8mm high, 32.7mm width, is 20.3mm thick (rim), 6.6mm thick (body) and weighs 12.67 grams. The rim is 7.5mm wide.
