A relatively small strap handle from a medieval green ‘splash’ glazed jug of probable later medieval (1200-1400) date. The handle is incomplete and there is no evidence of the body extant on the fragment. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, white quartz and grog inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. The colour of the fabric is an oxidised orange. The outer surface is glazed and the inner is heavily abraded. The glaze is a relatively thick brown green colour. The handle has also been decorated with a series of small diagonal slashes which have been probably applied with a bladed knife. The slashes are graded so the smallest are on the external edges and the longest at the centre, where a long recessed groove extends from top to base. Not enough of the fragment survives to suggest the size or form of the vessel. The sherd measures: 69.3mm in length, 65.5mm max. width, is 24.8mm thick at the junction between handle and body, the handle at the broken edge is 10.6mm thick. It weighs 46.69 grams.
