A relatively large sherd from the base of a glazed vessel of probable medieval (1150-1300) date. The base is most likely to be from the bottom of a large serving jug and has a ‘pie-crust’ styled decoration. The external face of the sherd is glazed with a relatively thick greenish brown coloured glaze which covers the whole of the surface and the external edge of the base. The base is very patchy and is more decorated with drip marks. The glaze on the external face is uniform in nature. The rim and body is missing. The base of the pot is likely to be relatively flat. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, quartz, and grog inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is an oxidised orange colour. A suggested diameter of the base is 16cm; the sherd represents 20% of the base. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated. The sherd measures 53.7mm length, 81.8mm width, is 35.92mm high and is 8.7mm thick (base), 6.3mm thick (body) and weighs 69.29 grams.
