A sherd from the rim of a vessel of probable later medieval (1350-1500) date. The sherd is most likely to be from a small jar or pot; it has not been sooted and so is unlike to have been used as a cooking vessel. The internal and external faces of the sherd are glazed, although the inner surface is much patchier than the outer. The glaze is a relatively thick yellowish brown-green colour. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, grog and ironstone inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is an oxidised mid orange colour. The rim has an inturned swollen lip. A suggested diameter of the rim is 13cm; the sherd represents 15% of the rim. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated.
The sherd measures 33.9mm length, 54.7mm width, is 13.1mm thick (rim), 5.4mm thick (body) and weighs 16.02 grams.
