A relatively large sherd from the base of a vessel of probable medieval (1150-1300) date. The external face of the sherd is sooted and so most likely to be from a cooking vessel. The base of the pot is likely to be relatively flat possibly suggesting that it may also be utilised as a serving dish. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, quartz, iron stone and coal inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is a mid grey colour. A suggested diameter of the base is 24cm; the sherd represents 11% of the base. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated. The sherd measures 39.2mm length, 81.0mm width, is 32mm high and is 6.6mm thick (base), 4.3mm thick (body) and weighs 56.19 grams.
