A sherd from the rim of a vessel of probable medieval (1150-1300) date. The external face of the sherd is sooted and so most likely to be from a cooking pot. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit and white quartz and small fragments of coal inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is a light grey colour, however the external face is slightly oxidised (orange) and has a surface of black carbon – soot-like- deposit. The rim has an out-turned swollen lip and is heavily recessed. A suggested diameter of the rim is 32cm; the sherd represents 7% of the rim. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated. The sherd measures 41.9mm length, 69.2mm width, is 10.1mm thick (rim), 4.0mm thick (body) and weighs 21.44 grams.
