BUCKLE

Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of post-medieval date (1550-1650). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan (rectangular with rounded corners) with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is lost but would have been attached to the central bar by the terminal being folded back upon itself. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. The frame of the buckle is decorated with a series of cast floral and vine like scrolls with small cast knops positioned either side of the central bar. At the mid point of the loop on both edges are well cast flowers, which are similar in style to the Tudor rose design. The decoration is limited to the upper face and the reverse is plain and undecorated. There is no evidence of an applied surface present. The buckle measures 57.5mm long, 62.9mm wide, is 3.7mm thick and weighs 21.65 grams. The buckle is a mid - light green colour with an abraded polished patina which covers all surfaces. Movement in the ploughsoil has resulted in the buckle becoming asymmetrical, and slightly bowed in profile. Where the patina has been lost a light green powdery active corrosion is present. Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800' pages 66-67 (specifically no 411). He dates these to the early post medieval (Tudor and Stuart) period (1550-1650).
