An incomplete buckle plate, of very worn and corroded purplish metal, the broad end with stumps of twin projections and pierced by a rivet-hole, raised moulded decoration of an animal-head in high relief with its snout towards the rounded perforated terminal. >28mm x 9mm. Stylistically similar finds are known from a number of sites including Postwick (HER 25984), Wendling (HER 40868), Shotesham (HER 20297), St Faith’s Lane, Norwich, (Geake in Emery (2007), Fig. 5.90, SF 102) and Fishergate, York (Rogers (1993), fig.652, no.5320. The closest parallel to this example is a buckle plate from Gisleham, Suffolk (SMR ref: GSE Misc.). 9th century.
