A corroded copper alloy medieval casket key. The key has a seemingly solid stem of oval section with a hollow end; the end has been worn through slightly on both sides. The stem flattens out towards the bow; the latter is circular in shape with a circular perforation (ext. dia. 11.5mm). There is a 'collar', or moulding, between bow and stem. At the other end the bit is rectangular in shape with a stepped cleft which creates a thin rectangular ward on the outside edge. The key measures 31.9mm x 11.5mm x 5mm and weighs 4.04g. Casket keys date from the late 12th to early 14th century (Read 2001, 67)
