Post-medieval gold inscribed posy-ring Date: Probably Second half of 17th Century

A gold finger ring with a D-shaped section, no joint is evident in the hoop of the ring. The exterior of the hoop has been decorated with an elaborate, sunken floral design, with scrolling foliage. In between the floral designs are two doves. The sunken floral designs have then been infilled with green and dark red enamel, while the doves are shiny white. This enamel survives largely intact. The interior of the hoop is inscribed with serifed letters Love requits' me The area between the beginning and the end of the inscription is undecorated.

Notes:

In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. A similar finger ring can be seen in the Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, p151, Fig: 723 (Treasure case 2005 T490). Neither 2005 T490 or this case have an identified marker's mark or date letter, so Judy Rudoe (British Museum) states that they are difficult to date with any accuracy and there are few parallels for the external decoration, but the inscription and lettering style would indicate a 17th century date.
