COIN HOARD

Unique ID: PAS-0543C7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

1121 Roman silver denarii to AD 64 BM ref.: 2008 T410

Date of discovery: July 2008 Circumstances of discovery: The finder uncovered a Roman white ware pot containing a large proportion of the coins whilst metal detecting, the remaining coins were found subsequently in the vicinity. Although, members of the Warmington Historical Society have been investigating parts of this site, which contains Roman features, the finder was not detecting in the same area as the Society were excavating.

Discussion: We have examined the coins and found there to be 773 Republican and 348 early Imperial denarii; the earliest identifiable coin is a ROSTRUM TRIDENS (206-195 BC) and the latest is a PONTIF MAX TR P X COS IIII of Nero (63/4AD). The majority of the coins present will have a high silver content of between 80 and 98%.

Early Roman hoards of this nature are not uncommon and one or two other, much smaller examples have been discovered within Warwickshire (eg. the Great Packington Hoard, Treasure Annual Reports for 1998-99 and 2002)

Summary Republic, 772 Augustus (31 BC-AD 14), 314 Claudius (AD 41-54), 15 Nero Caesar, 1 Nero (AD 54-68), 15 Illegible, 2 Irregular, 2

Conclusion: As a hoard of more than two associated coins, each containing over 10% precious metal and more than 300 years old, this find qualifies as treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.

Notes:

The hoard has since been published as a BAR.

Ireland, S. 2013 The South-Warwickshire Hoard of Roman Denarii: A Catalogue BAR British Series 585.
