Copper alloy contemporary cast copy (Limesfalsum / Limesfalschung) of an as of Julia Mamaea (222-35), type uncertain, c. 222-50.
Notes:
This coin is one of a series of copies that are known as limesfalsa (literally meaning false coin from the frontier). They are most common on the Rhine and Danube frontiers, an exceptionally large number being recorded at Carnuntum. Most of them were probably made in the 3rd century to help alleviate a shortage of small change. A small number of other limesfalsa have been recorded on the PAS database, for example LANCUM-748A72. The largest published assemblage from Britain is from Caerleon (George C. Boon in Numismatic Chronicle 1965).
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
