Incomplete Roman (AD75-200) cast copper alloy brooch, probably a plate-headed trumpet derivative brooch. The wings are rectangular, extending out from a rounded, almost trumpet headed bow. The wings are rectangular in plan with a 'C' shaped cross section, to encase the spring mechanism. There is a double lug on the reverse of the wings, which secure the axis bar and chord of the spring; the partial corroded remains of the spring adheres to the reverse of the wings. The front of the wings are decorated with a cross-hatch design. The incomplete bow initially curves with a pronounced angle. There is an incomplete, narrow projection along the centre of the bow. The fragment is 16.98mm long, 12.88mm wide across the wings, 5.13mm wide across the bow and weighs 4.82 grams. The brooch has an even olive green patina, with some patches of lighter green corrosion. No exact parallel could be found for this brooch, however it is broadly similar ro Hattatt p137 no 964, although this example has a sprung pin, rather than a hinged pin.
