Five possible core fragments, numbers relate to objects in photograph 1. Large secondary flake struck off a prepared platform. Bulb of percussion and percussion waves on the ventral face; multiple arises on the dorsal face. There is a small area of cortex at the distal end of the dorsal face. The distal end is either snapped or the core was a very short double ended type. Mid grey with paler grey/buff areas; 19.03 grams 2. Large tertiary flake struck off a prepared platform. Bulb of percussion and percussion waves on the ventral face; multiple arises on the dorsal face. The flake has removed a large area of the platform and may have been a core refreshment flake, removing a side which had become too curved which would have produced only very small flakes. The distal end is irregular but this appears to be damage to this area rather than retouch. Pale grey/buff with mid grey mottling; 32.09 grams 3. Large secondary flake struck off a rough, broken, area. Bulb of percussion and percussion waves on the ventral face; multiple arises on the dorsal face. Cortex covers c.10% of the dorsal face. The flake is very thick and previous removals appear also to be large. This and the rough damage at the proximal end may suggest it was a flake removed when roughing out a core rather than one for use. Pale grey/buff with mid grey areas; 26.57 grams 4. Large secondary flake struck off a rough, broken, area. Bulb of percussion (partially removed by bulb scars) and percussion waves on the ventral face; multiple arises on the dorsal face. Cortex covers c.5% of the dorsal face. The flake is very thick and there is some evidence of a prepared platform at the distal end. This suggests it may be from roughing out or refreshing a core. Mottled dark-pale grey; 25.56 grams 5. Part of a heavily worked core from which blades have been removed. Irregular and seven sided in plan and roughly triangular in profile. There is a prepared platform at the top; two or possibly three large, accidental breaks forming three sides including one ending in a hinge fracture; with the remaining sides created by the regular removal of narrow, parallel blades. Dark brown in colour and 23.72 grams. The flint is of finer quality than the other pieces and the blade removals appear finer.

Notes:

Part of a large collection of debitage, cores and casual tools from one site. These are possibly from two groups with some finer flint used for a more blade focused technology, possibly Early Neolithic in date and a possibly Late Neolithic group using poorer quality material and broad flakes. This may also be a contemporary response to different materials or collection of different materials for different tools. One identified tool, a scraper, is possibly of the horseshoe type most common in the Late Neolithic. Interestingly this uses the higher quality flint supporting the view that variations are due to the different materials rather than periods.
