A fragment of a copper alloy post medieval spur and one of the spur buckles; cast high-tin copper alloy spur buckle with part of high-tin copper alloy spur strap and copper alloy attachment link. This dates from the late 17th or early 18th century (c.1660-1720). The buckle is of asymmetrical type with a rounded loop at one end and a squared loop with diagonal cut corners. It is slightly curved up at both ends. It is drilled with a tiny circular hole in both sides of the centre to hold a separate spindle. The spindle is of an iron-rich material and has broken away at one side of the buckle, although it is still present in situ. There is a large lump of rust-coloured corrosion product at the centre of the spindle, suggesting that the pin was of an iron-rich material which has now corroded away. Much of the spindle is sheathed within the attachment end of a separate copper alloy plate which sits beneath the frame and extends beyond it. The plate tapers and is curled back on itself, forming a loop just beyond the buckle frame. This loop is attached through one of the holes of a fragment of a spur. The fragment is of high-tin copper alloy and represents the end of one arm of the spur. It has a lateral figure-8 terminal, thus having two circular loops for attaching to the other fittings. One loop is attached to the buckle by the hooked plate. The other loop is attached to a stud fitting. The fitting is of copper alloy and is in the form of a small plate with a similar curled over end forming an attachment loop which fits through the hole in the spur terminal. The other end of the plate has a short stem with a domed, teardrop-shaped stud. Length (buckle frame) c.30mm, length (frame with chape) 39.1mm, width (frame) 22.9mm, thickness (frame) 3.7mm, length (strap fragment) 21.6mm, width (strap) 13.5mm, thickness (strap) 3.6mm, length (link) 23.4mm, width (link) 8.8mm, thickness (inc knob) 8.2mm, weight (total) 18.30g Ref: Whitehead 'Buckles; 1250-1800' (pp. 97, nos. 596-599) for asymmetrical buckles drilled to hold a separate spindle. The buckles in Whitehead are Jacobean shoe buckles but the technology of the separate spindle allows a contemporary date for this spur buckle.
