BOOK FITTING

Unique ID: HAMP-B46464

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A damaged but complete hook-piece from a copper-alloy post-medieval book-clasp. The artefact is now corroded and bent upwards at the attachment end, having received strikes in the past. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with a flared attachment end. At the opposite end is a curved hook (up to 7.5mm wide). The artefact has been cut from a flat sheet. There is a single central rivet hole at the attachment end which contains the corroded remains of an iron rivet. The upper surface is decorated with two pairs of transverse grooves at the attachment end. Within the field thus created is possible foliate decoration, hard to distinguish. Below, within the main field is central punched annulet design in a line. If there is further decoration this has been obscured by corrosion. This artefact is of a now red-brown metal, largely overlain by variable mid-green patination and areas of lighter corrosion product.
