A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. This is a one-piece example with rearward facing hook at the top of the head (L.: 6.3mm). This hook retains the external chord of the spring; at one end the spring beyond is lost, along with the pin. On the other side the spring coil is complete and curves through three loops from the point at which it emerges from the head. These coils are covered in orange corrosion product perhaps suggesting that the axis bar was made of iron. Above the spring are two flat wings; one is truncated, while the other extends for 5.1mm from the bow. The bow is sub-oval in cross-section. It tapers from a maximum width of c. 3.4mm to 1.4mm at the catchplate end. After an initial steep rise it curves gradually through to the catchplate which is in the same plane as the head. The catchplate itself is highly abraded and has been bent to one side slightly; the web extends for 20.45mm up the bow. The catchplate was possibly openwork. The artefact has corroded to a red-brown colour with areas of light green corrosion product.
