Post-medieval silver hammered groat of Mary I dating from 1553-54, mm pomegranate (after first word of legend).
I have examined 13 early post-medieval coins reported found in the Lancaster Area of Lancashire. They are official English silver coins, and will thus have a silver content of 92.5% fine metal - the sterling standard. A summary list of the coins follows (a more detailed catalogue is attached to this report).
1 groat of Mary I (1553-1554)
1 groat of Elizabeth I, first issue (1560-61)
2 sixpences of Elizabeth I, second issue (1561 and 1571)
4 threepences of Elizabeth I, second issue (1561, 1572 (x2) and 1578)
1 sixpence of Elizabeth I, second issue (1581)
1 shilling of Elizabeth I, third issue (1595-98)
3 sixpences of Elizabeth I, third issue (1593 (x2), 1594)
These coins are evidently a single group of material deposited on one occasion in the late 1590s or early 1600s, perhaps the loss of a purse. The coins of the hoard span almost the entire reign of two Tudor monarchs, Mary I (1553-54) and Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and four different denominations are present: 1 shilling, 2 groats, 6 sixpences and 4 threepences.
Notes:
In my opinion, as a group of good silver coins deposited on a single occasion, this find fulfils the criteria of Treasure according to the terms of the Act.
