A complete Medieval to Post-Medieval silver-gilt finger-ring. 15th to 16th century. Treasure case no. 2009 T183. Outer diameter: 24.5mm; inner diameter: 20.0mm; width at bezel: 8.3mm; weight: 7.64g.
A silver-gilt finger-ring with a flat bezel and shoulders fluted at the edges. The flat surfaces are incised with oblique panels containing simple incised lines and each flute is incised with double-lined chevron motifs. Below each shoulder there are two horizontal steps. The base of the hoop is plain.
The design resembles that of iconographic rings of the Medieval period having a representation of saints on a double faceted bezel. A similar finger-ring, although with a slightly different bezel and shoulders, has been reported from Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire (Treasure Annual Report 2002, no. 108).
The find contains a minimum of 10% silver. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
