A damaged copper-alloy Roman gilded disc brooch. The decoration consists of a central deep cell surrounded by two ring cells within a raised border. This in turn is surrounded by an outer ring which has traces of gilding surviving, also within a raised border. There are small diagonal dashed lines in the gilded area, like ropework. The edges of the brooch are damaged and the pin is missing. The catchplate and pin mechanism are also damaged, just surviving as two raised lugs. It is 25.6mm in length, 23.9mm wide, and 4.1mm thick. It weighs 4.88gm. The brooch has a dark green and black patina. Brooches of this type usually date from 200 - 350 AD (Worrall 2007, Roman Brooch Timeline). A similar example is number 1214 on page 364 of Hattatt's Visual Catalogue.
