A gold post-medieval posy ring with a D-shaped band. The exterior is undecorated. The interior bears an inscription in italics reading vertue passeth riches (i.e. Virtue surpasses riches).

The ring is almost identical to one discovered at Brokenborough, Wiltshire (2003 T223). There are four posy rings within the British Museum's collection with the same inscription, although no spelling variant is identical to this particular ring. Two of these rings have a maker's mark which can be dated to pre-1707:

1961, 1202.366: same mark on mourning ring of 1668

1961, 1202.368: appears on mark plate of 1682-97

The inscription is noted by Joan Evans in her book 'English Posies and Posy Rings' (p.105). This refers to a ring in the V&A's collection (385-1864), listed in Charles Oman's 1930 catalogue of rings (cat. no. 684).
