991-997AD. Aethelred II 'The Unready', hammered silver broad penny. Length 18.9mm, Width 16.4mm, Thickness 1mm, Diameter 18.9mm, Weight 1g. Obverse: Draped bare-headed bust left, infront a sceptre with three pellets. Inscription: EDELHE[ ] Reverse: Short cross voided with 'C,R,U,X' in angles. Inscription: (H)EACV(LF)[ ] Mint Name: Possibly London, Southwark, Chichester or Winchester. Die axis 90 deg. or 3 o'clock. Broken, incomplete, two thirds of the coin, with inner circle and almost half of the legend (six letters) of the legend remaining. Little wear, attractive silver colour but very thin - several holes visible and several small cracks on the surface - very fragile condition. Ref.
