Treasure reported from Andrew Rogerson: Curving fragment of round-sectioned gold wire, both ends chopped and hammered flat on one side. A pair of transverse lines on one hammered facet may have been engraved to test the metal.

Date: Possibly Middle or Late Bronze Age or Iron Age.

Metal Analysis: Gold 84-87%, silver 11-13%, and approximately 1% copper.

The form of the section of wire indicates that it could be prehistoric but it is impossible to be certain as it is undiagnostic. The results of the metal analysis provide further evidence that the wire is prehistoric in date.

Although it is impossible to be certain, on the balance of probabilities the object is likely to be more than 300 years old. The age and precious metal content of this item therefore qualify it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
