Medieval harness pendant; cast copper alloy harness pendant of 14th century date. The pendant is of quatrelobed shape with a large, rounded lug at the top in the perpendicular plane to the pendant. The lug is pierced with a circular hole to form a suspension loop. The pendant is decorated on the front face with enamel and gilding. The device is worn and somewhat confused but seems to be a beast, possibly a lion rampant with shaggy legs, heading left in white enamel on a gilt background. The back face is undecorated. Length 34.8mm, width 25.2mm, thickness (plate) 1.7mm, thickness (loop) 7.8mm, weight 6.12g Ref: Griffiths ‘Harness pendants and associated fittings’ in ‘The Medieval Horse and its Equipment’ (pp. 61-71)
