A cast copper alloy biface coin weight of Post-Medieval date. It is flat, square in shape and rectangular in section, with extensive tool marks visible on all faces. The front face depicts St. Michael with a halo spearing a dragon to the right within an inner circle of pellets. The back face depicts a crown above the letters X.s within a circle of pellets. The back face is also countermarked with the letter I surmounted by a crown. It measures 14.34mm in length, 14.27mm in width, 2.81mm in thickness, and weighs 4.06g. This is a British coin weight for the value of one Angel, the reverse type giving the value of 10 shillings. It falls just a little under the standard weight for an Angel (4.2g), but is for an Angel of James I's 3rd coinage (Withers and Withers, 1995: p. 14). Withers and Withers (1995: p. 67) note that the countermark seen on the reverse of this weight was in use at the end of James I's reign and the very first issues of Charles I, giving a date range for the weight of between c.1619 and 1625-1630 AD.
