COIN HOARD

Unique ID: NMS-EA4080

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Description: The group as found originally constituted six coins, all pennies of the late 13th or early 14th centuries. Unfortunately, one of these was subsequently lost before it could be handed in to Norfolk Landscape Archaeology's Identification and Recording Service. Cursory examination, however, revealed it to be of a similar date to the other five. The five surviving coins are all pennies of Edward I. One is an Irish penny struck at Waterford and showing signs of wear, the other four are in much crisper condition and can all be dated to a short period at the end of Edward's reign, from 1303 to 1307. The sharp condition of the four later coins makes it likely that the putative purse containing these coins was lost not long after this date, probably between c.1310 and c.1320.

Notes:

The Treasure Act states that two or more silver coins of three hundred years old or more lost or deposited together constitute Treasure. The close date range of these coins, together with their recovery from a very small area make it overwhelmingly likely that they all come from the same deposit, probably a purse lost soon after the latest coin was struck, and so a priori represent a case of Treasure.

Update: Two more coins were found in 2008 and reported under the Treasure Act as 2008T708. They are recorded separately on the PAS database at NMS-C28AC4.
