An incomplete cast copper alloy tap of Medieval to Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1350 – c. AD 1600). Length: 46.7mm; width; 31.1mm; thickness: 10.3mm; weight: 16.38g. The tap has an incomplete ‘fleur-de-lis’ handle although some parts of it are missing due to breaks. The base of the handle expands slightly at the front and back to form a bevelled neck. Below the neck is a solid cylindrical shaft, 20.8mm in length. The shaft tapers slightly: below the neck the diameter is 10.1mm and at the opposite end it has a diameter of 8.7mm. Close to the end there is a transverse hole that allowed the flow of liquid. This hole is an elongated oval shape and measures approximately 6.0mm x 3.4mm. This tap has a mid-green patina overall and has horizontal file marks on both faces of the handle. The edges of the handle have also been filed. A tap of similar design has been recorded from archaeological excavations in London and dated c. 1350-1400 (Egan 1998. ‘The Medieval Household: Medieval Finds from Excavations in London’. 242, fig. 189, ref. 746). However, similar forms of taps may have carried on into the early Post-Medieval period.
