Incomplete Medieval lead ampulla, missing one handle while the other is damaged and incomplete. It weighs 69.82g. The ampulla has been slightly mis-cast, one half being sited slightly lower than the other. The ampulla is of Spencer's Type II, with smooth edges. To one side (which is rounded) is the scallop shell decoration on the bottom half, below a horizontal rib. On the other side (which is rather flat) is an eight-petalled flower on a cross-hatched background, within two concentric circles between which is a zig-zag decoration on a cross-hatched background. The scallop shell represents the pilgrimage and St James of Compostela. Ampulla first came into use in the last quarter of the 13th century though were more popular in the 14th and 15th century as a means of carrying holy water. Measures 48.09x33.53x12.97mm. The neck is 20.58mm wide.
