An Anglo-Saxon copper alloy sleeve clasp dating to the 6th century AD. The clasp is of Hines form B18b (Hines, 1993, p59). The clasp is the 'catch-piece', having a small integral rearward hook on the underside. The front of the clasp is highly decorative. The bar is rectangular and divided into five smaller decorative rectangular panels. The outer two and the central panel are undecorated whereas the two between are transversly ribbed. The clasp has four conjoined roundels along the rear edge. Each roundel is decorated with a stamped cross, and conjoined to the next by three grooves. Between the outer pairs of roundels are two pierced circles through which the clasp would have been sown to the garment. The surface of the clasp has been silvered. Hines describes Form 18 clasps as 'a set of relatively elaborately designed Class B clasps, the richness of which relative to most other members of the class is reflected by the fact that many of these examples are gilt, and some are silver plated or carry Style 1 ornament.' (Hines p59). This example is very similar to one found at Coddenham, Suffolk (West 1998, p139, fig. 23, no. 2).
