BOOK FITTING

Unique ID: SF-1DD8F7

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A small cast copper alloy hinged fitting of probable Post-Medieval or later date. It has a flat triangular plate that tapers to a point, with a central heart shaped perforation. At the edge opposing the point are two integral flaps that are rolled over with a rectangular slot between them designed to hold a now missing iron bar and thus create a hinge. Two circular perforations are noted on the plate itself just below the lugs, presumably for attachment to a larger object, perhaps something like a book. Traces of an added white metal coating are noted on the exterior surface of the plate. The entire object measures 18.20mm in length, 13.68mm in width, 1.50mm in thickness and weighs 1.70g. This example is of probable Post-Medieval or later date, with objects of similar shape and function recorded on the PAS database indicating a possible date range from the 15th to 17th centuries AD (see for example BH-4B4942 or HAMP-CB16B2).
