Medieval buckle plate; cast copper alloy buckle plate of probable 13th or early 14th century date. The plate is roughly square with a raised design of a beast, probably a lion, advancing left with all legs on the ground. Beyond the decorated panel the buckle plate has a narrow, plain border which extends at the terminal end with the remains of two strips which would have been rolled to hold the pin bar of the buckle frame. These are now broken away. The plate is undecorated on the reverse. It has a rivet hole in each corner at the attachment end, the lower of which still retains its rivet. Length 25.3mm, width 19.2mm, thickness of plate 2.5mm, thickness of rivet 5.1mm, weight 3.73g Refs: Egan and Pritchard ‘Dress Accessories: Medieval finds from excavations in London’ (pp. 111-112, no. 500) Griffiths, Philpott and Egan ‘Meols: The Archaeology of the North Wirral Coast’ (pp. 106-107, nos. 851 & 852)
