Fragment of the base of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture. Around a quarter of the base of the vessel survives, this rises slightly towards the centre of the upper face. On what would have been the inside of the vessel are what appears to be the letter M or W - the makers mark. There may have been other letters, though these are now illegible. The small size of the fragment makes it had to determine the shape of the original vessel. However, given its shape it may possibly belong to a plate or dish of Dragendorff form 15 to 31, dating to the mid 1st to mid 2nd century AD. The fragment is heavily worn and much of the surface is missing. Mid orange colour with reddish-orange slip. Length: 72.9mm, Width: 46.0mm Weight: 35.1g
